Circulator Ad

I think the most overlooked sector of media is advertising. It was certainly meaningless to me until I was fortunate enough to take a course with Dr. Jack Bratich. I realized there should be more to observing these ads than reading them only when avoiding eye contact on the train.

The following was brought to my attention by a friend who thought he was the odd one out for thinking what you're about to think:

While 3 years ago I would have probably felt the same way, I think it's safe to say now that "they" (advertisers) are completely aware of whatever interpretation you have of their ad. FYI, the Circulator is a particular bus in DC.

Who wants to look at two silhouettes sip champagne? No one.
Who wants to look at a sexual reference? Everyone.

1st grade writing assignment

"I found a bird's net. It was itrsting. It was a robin's nest. whar wor 3 egg's. But the next day there was a bad storm and one of the eggs fell out of the nest. My bruther Carl found it then got a stick and cracked it. It looked growss. I was sad. the end."

Baby’s got back and busy life

Things are pleasantly settling down now and I have full faith that I’ll be serving up some tasty posts far more regularly. In my defense, I give over 50 hours a week to my job, have been living in 3 cities, had a trip to the ER, have taken a few road trips atop of visiting Sicily, Ecuador and Nepal, have been volunteering with teens, and had my heart almost explode, literally!

I know this is an easy comeback topic, and talking about it is going to get old— ‘cause it’s going down in the history books! But I think it’s pretty great that now, four days afterwards, the majority of folks I know are still recovering from all that happened Tuesday night. For further evidence of this, see time of post.

How about these coming together efforts? I like to think I try to avoid sap, so lets say it’s refreshing to see people being open to the fact that other opinions exist (not my style, but gets the point across.)

Bloody Funny

Megan Meier Case

I'm curious to see how this case unfolds. If you are unfamiliar with the case, I suggest reading around to get the full scoop. For the lazy and trustworthy:

Some 13 year old girls were having some major drama. A mother of one of the girls (Lori Drew) took part in creating a false myspace account ("16 year old Josh") to first woo one of the girls (Megan Meier) and then to hurt her. Meier, who has a history of depression, hanged herself after "Josh's" messages became bitter to the point of saying the world would be better without her. Drew's lawyer has recently said the charges should be dropped because if she is guilty, then so are millions of Internet users every day.

There are so many issues with this case. I hope it gets strong coverage- and not through crummy Hallmark-esq videos. Meier was rightfully mourned by the media. But now the focus needs to grow and stir discussions on what we do now. What laws and ethics apply to new media? What rights do we still have with these advances in technology? Are we responsible for our e-actions? Why do such morons get to be parents?
